COWL NECK

Image
A cowl is a long hooded robe with wide sleeves worn by members of some monastic orders. The term has also been adopted to refer to a wide range of coverings, from the cowl which covers the engine of a car to hoods used to cover chimneys, improving their draft and cutting down on errant sparks. You may also hear the word “cowl” in reference to a loose, hood-like neckline on a woman's garment. Cowl necklines are very popular on winter sweaters, offering insulation to the neck to keep the wearer comfortable in cold weather. The word is derived from the Latin  cucullus , which originally referred to a type of bag used to carry groceries. Over time, the word came to be used in reference to hoods, which were sewn in much the same style.    Below are more unique styles with cowl necklines which I looooovve

BOAT (BATEAU/SABRINA) NECKLINE

Image
Me wearing a Sabrina Neck Ankara Dress designed and sewn by me (Visiwek Couture) A boatneck is a type of neckline in both men and women’s wear. Initially, the neckline, also called the bateau neck/Sabrina, was designed for sailors. The wide slit made it easy to change a shirt quickly, since it slips easily over the head. This can be advantageous when clothing gets wet and needs to be changed in a hurry. The modern boatneck is a popular design especially in women’s clothing. The front and back are of the same design. Frequently, it simply means a wide slit across the top of a garment that forms the neckline. It does cover from the middle to most of the shoulders, though some are cut lower on the shoulders. The boatneck can be featured on a variety of women’s tops. Knit tops, sweaters, and blouses can all featu

SURPLICE NECKLINE

In fashion, a surplice is a diagonally crossed neckline and/or bodice. It is also thought of as a "faux wrap" style and creates a deep v-shaped neckline. This is a fashionable and very feminine look used for women's clothing, yet, ironically, it was inspired by garments worn by men. Today's surplice style was suggested by the Tunic vestment garment traditionally worn by male church leaders in many Western churches. These vestments were, in turn, inspired by the Greek alb tunic and are often white with fairly wide sleeves. The surplice styles made popular in women's fashion are recognizable to the vestments only in the crossover aspect. Women's fashions may be in the form of T-shirts, sweaters or dresses. The surplice may be just a cross-over neckline that ends before the waist, or it may extend into the bodice of the garment. A faux wrap top or sweater may also have a self-tie at the side to accentuate the wrap look. Some tops that end the surplice at th
